Brooklyn-based SunDub has been consistently turning heads with their powerful performances across North America. Anchored by the dynamic brother-sister team Joanna Teters (lead vocals) and Ben Teters (vocals-drums), and an airtight rhythm section—Finnegan Singer (guitar), Jose Lopez (guitar), Derrick Bourne (bass), Eric "The General'' Toussaint (vocals-keys), Sidney Mills (vocals-keys) — SunDub has blazed onto the scene with two album releases: "Burden of Love (2019) and “Spirits Eat Music” (2022), catching the eyes and ears of reggae, soul and conscious music lovers. Featuring collaborations with Peetah Morgan, Lutan Fyah, Ruff Scott, The Chronic Horns, and Larry McDonald, SunDub continues to churn out exciting expressions of reggae’s classic undulating pulse and lush subterranean grooves, reinvented for listeners of all times and genres.

Outside of the studio and off of the stage, the band members that make up SunDub put their talents to work in a myriad of ways: using their music as a platform to advocate for political movements, teaching music lessons to New York City youth, and collaborating with non-profits to create change, to name a few. Like so many other bands, SunDub was hit hard by the onset of the pandemic of 2020 — tours canceled, opportunities postponed, income lost. Instead of being discouraged, the band came together on a Brooklyn patio and figured out how to make the most of the situation. During weekly, COVID-safe live stream performances in the summer of 2020, SunDub raised over $1,000 for the NAACP Education and Legal Defense Fund, using their platform to rally their community around the importance of political activism and dismantling unjust racial and societal structures.

“In a world that is frequently heavy and dark, Spirits Eat Music is a ray of musical sunshine. It is a remedy that requires neither a consultation with a physician nor a prescription. If you’re looking for a musical mood boost, this album will get you off to a good start.” – Glide Magazine

“Teters pinpoints a lot of social upheavals experienced over the last few years and melodic support from GRAMMY-winning artist Peetah Morgan flawlessly chimes in to remind us that we are strong enough to adapt. We can find new ways to love when our old ways are challenged.” – Topshelf Music on New Ways to Love

“SunDub’s] music calls you to movement, dance and smoothly leads you to your melodic world. The mood and atmosphere of reggae sound, swinging the rhythm and beautiful, kind melody.” – Nagamag

Music

  • Earlier this summer, as they began rolling out music from their second full-length album, SunDub kicked things off by showcasing three diverse singles showing multiple facets of their musical approach on Spirits Eat Music. Starting with “Jump And Dance,” featuring Lutan Fyah, the Brooklyn-based five-piece delivered an irresistible feel good tune perfect for the warm summer months. Switching it up, next came the title track “Spirits Eat Music,” a catchy tune with a heavier theme that speaks to a personal message of love and loss for the band. The latest single “New Ways To Love,” featuring GRAMMY-winning vocalist Peetah Morgan (of Morgan Heritage), inspires an optimistic outlook towards life through its uplifting lyrics. The official video for the song (https://youtu.be/NTh2UPrsLZ0) was just released, further showcasing the playful and positive nature of the track. The video was filmed on location in Florida and was directed, shot, and edited by David Svedosh.

The three singles garnered positive press, accolades, and radio support from tastemakers, including BBC’s Sir David Rodigan, which added to the anticipation for the album. Now the wait is over with Spirits Eat Music finally dropping on all digital platforms through Easy Star Records. Simultaneously, vinyl and CD editions of the record can be pre-ordered (HERE), along with a new, exclusive T-shirt design. All copies pre-ordered will be autographed by the band. The physical versions of the album will be released January 13.

Spirits Eat Music was recorded at Lydgate Sound in Kauai, HI, in May 2021. Joanna Teters explains, “We got an invitation to record at Lydgate Sound, a special studio located on a remote cacao farm. The island and farm envelopes its visitors with lush nature and sweet sunshine, offering a beautiful kind of inspiration that can only come from being disconnected to our everyday lives and distractions.” Ben Teters enthusiastically adds, “We enlisted Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse) to engineer and co-produce the album. We worked with Sidney on our first album Burden of Love – the opportunity to go deep for two weeks in the studio with him took the project to new heights.”

  • “Burden of Love" features reggae royalty The Chronic Horns (Easy Star All-Stars), Larry McDonald (Lee Scratch Perry, Gil Scott-Heron) and is mixed and co-produced by Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse). They lend their talents to Joanna Teters' commanding and soulfully smoky lead vocals and blend seamlessly with the super tight arrangements of the SunDub rhythm section. The result is a stand out expression of reggae’s classic undulating pulse and lush subterranean grooves, reinvented for listeners of all times and genres.

  • “Close to Me Dub” is drenched in reverb and puts an airy, psychedelic vibe on SunDub’s most popular song. Concluding the ‘SunDub Meets Victor Rice’ EP, Rice reimagines the original vocal-heavy song in an exploratory dub to appeal to a different audience and expose younger fans to the art of dub remixing. Old school heads with Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby records in their collection will vibe with the authenticity while younger listeners will get lost in the echoing hypnosis throughout the entire 3-song EP.

  • On the heels of their summertime dub EP release, Brooklyn-based band SunDub now brings you “Ain’t Nobody,” the celebrated funk/soul classic, first released in 1983 by Rufus and Chaka Khan.  SunDub, fronted by lead singer Joanna Teters, redresses this classic, giving it a perfectly fitting reggae makeover you didn’t know it needed. Teters pays homage to the original with her own powerhouse vocals, while the band serves up a heavy rocking, reverb-drenched groove, highlighting the song's iconic essence. The track, which features Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse) on organ, as well production and mixing credits, represents an evolution in the SunDub sound and provides an exciting glimpse into the future. “Ain’t Nobody” was recorded at The Creamery Studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn before the sweeping COVID shutdowns that paralyzed New York City earlier this year.

  • SunDub’s next victim in their series of reggae-flipped R&B hits is none other than the massive 90’s power ballad “Don’t Let Go (Love)” by En Vogue. This anthemic and explosive track aims straight at the hearts of 80’s babies and reggae fans alike, once again highlighting SunDub’s high-level musicianship and production chops. The searing guitar riffs and relentless rhythm section center around the lead vocal that carries each section forward with new purpose and passion. Teters’ interpretation of En Vogue’s lyrics is sure to bring the timeless “unrequited love” story to a new audience while thrilling unexpecting fans of the original.
